The mandate of the Space Materials Division (SMD) is research and development in the area of space environment interaction with materials, space materials durability prediction, evaluation and enhancement. The main goal is to generate innovative material surface treatment and surface modification technologies as well as sophisticated multifunctional multi-layer protective coatings development. Various research and development activities are going on in space materials treatment, characterization, surface analysis, and properties evaluation, including international collaborative research activities in the area of Space Environment and Effects
